Reality Therapy, first developed in 1960s, by Dr. William Glasser is a method of counselling and therapy based on Choice Theory©, aimed to help individuals gain more effective control over their lives.
Choice Theory© posits that behavior is central to our existence and is driven by five genetically driven needs that is, survival, love and belonging, power/identity, freedom and fun. In practice, the most important need is love and belonging, as closeness and connectedness with the people we care about is a requisite for satisfying all of the needs. Hence, one of the goals in Reality Therapy is to provide a connection for people, beginning with the therapist-client connection.
Reality Therapy is also based on the belief of Choice Theory© that we choose what we do with our lives and that we are responsible for these choices. Using Choice Theory© and Reality Therapy (CTRT), our therapist helps individuals, through a process of self-inquiry and self-evaluation, understands their behavior, take responsibility for the behavioral choice in satisfying their needs without depriving others of a similar chance, as well as create a more satisfying life.
The approach is a non-coercive one that enhances people’s ability to make effective and need-fulfilling choices. Individuals will be the architect of their own transformation. The process helps build self-confidence and empower individuals to live a more satisfying life. CTRT has been widely used in education, mental health, social service as well as leadership and management.
CTRT is not only useful for individual counselling but also effective in working with couples, families, groups and systems. Human relationship issues are the primary problems affecting human beings hence it is not uncommon for the therapist to invite both, or all, individuals involved in the relationship system into the sessions.
Therapist facilitates couples and families towards understanding their roles in the problem relationship, identifying their mutual wants and goals for change and consequently, moving away from the cycle of ineffective to effective interactions.
